Avalon Beach is a northern beach side suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located 37 kilometers north of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Pittwater Council, in the Northern Beaches region. The area is also known as Avalon, with the name Avalon Beach being assigned during a change in boundaries and names in the Pittwater region in 2012. Over the last decade or so Avalon has become the favored sea-change destination for Sydney-siders looking to adopt the surfer lifestyle. As a result, the board-riding community here is large and enthusiastic but the skill level varies greatly so it is a good idea to watch for a bit before paddling into the fray. The edge of the south cliff is known as Little Avalon, and here the swell sucks up hard on a shallow rock shelf to produce fast-barreling tube rides. North Avalon breaks along the north headland and a nearby sandbank and attracts lots of older long boarders who don't always succeed in getting out of each others way. South Avalon is centered on a triangle-shaped sandbank near the 25 meter ocean rock pool that generates a mix of fun easy waves. Avalon was named after the mythical Avalon, a legendary island in Celtic languages mythology. According to legends, Avalon was an earthly paradise and the final resting place of King Arthur. Avalon Beach is a surfing beach and has a 25-metre salt water rock pool at the south end.
