Melbourne Docklands

Melbourne Docklands From art to sports and culture, Docklands offers a colorful variety of events and attractions – there's something to suit every passion and budget. Places Victoria is managing the development of Melbourne’s Docklands - one of Australia’s largest urban renewal projects under construction. Docklands' construction started in 1997. It is now 60% complete and has attracted more than $10 billion in private investment to date. Docklands is an extension to Melbourne’s central business district. Docklands occupies an area adjacent to the Melbourne CBD. It is bounded by Spencer Street, Wurundjeri Way and the Charles Grimes Bridge to the east, CityLink to the west and Lorimer Street across the Yarra to the south and is a primarily waterfront area centred on the banks of the Yarra River. A handful of significant buildings were retained, generally due to their association with the area's industrial and maritime history. Most of these heritage buildings are intended for adaptive reuse and integrated with new facilities. Before the foundation of Melbourne, Docklands was a wetlands area consisting of a large salt lake and a giant swamp at the mouth of the Moonee Ponds Creek. The planning of Docklands has raised a large amount of public debate and the area has created significant controversy, particularly the failed Ferris wheel. The myriad public artworks make for an inspiring breadcrumb trail on a stroll around the Docklands, where there is something for everyone from foodies to footy fans, excited kids and shoppers with keen eyes for a bargain.
