A Lovely Evening at Kerferd Road Pier Canvas Prints by Doug Cavanah

A Lovely Evening at Kerferd Road Pier Canvas Prints by Doug Cavanah The Pier off Kerferd Road, Albert Park, is of historical and architectural significance to the State of Victoria. The Kerferd Road Pier, Albert Park, is a timber construction. It is a wide jetty formed of timber pylons supporting timber cross members. The Kerferd Road Pier, Albert Park, is of historical and architectural significance as a rare example of a substantially intact nineteenth-century pier in Port Phillip Bay. It retains important elements of its original construction. The balustrade and decking are also of timber. Part of the decked area has since been asphalted. The current pier was constructed by the Public Works Department between 1887 and 1889, probably to a design of the Public Works Department. The successful tenderer for its construction was local resident Thomas Dalgeish. The Pier off Kerferd Road, Albert Park is of historical significance for its role in the development of the foreshore as a fashionable seaside resort, and in the growth of sea-bathing as a popular recreational activity in the late 1800s. Along with two extant Edwardian beach shelters, the Pier at Albert Park is the last surviving vestige of the extensive infrastructure associated with the swimming baths and beachfront recreation along this part of the foreshore. It remains an important local landmark.
