Mount Baker Wilderness is a 119,989-acre (48,558 ha) wilderness area within the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in the western Cascade Range of northern Washington state. Its eastern border is shared with the boundary of the Stephen Mather Wilderness and North Cascades National Park for a distance of 40 miles (65 kilometers). The wilderness extends from State Route 20 north to the Canadian border. On the west, it is bounded by the foothills of the Puget Sound lowlands. Almost entirely within Whatcom County, the wilderness lies on the western slopes of the Cascade Mountains. The three forks of the Nooksack River and the Baker River are the major drainages of the wilderness. The fruit of the various species of plant called huckleberries is generally edible and versatile in foods. The berries are small and round, 5–10 mm in diameter, and look like large dark blueberries. In taste, the berries range from tart to sweet, with a flavor similar to that of a blueberry, especially in blue and purple colored varieties. However, many kinds of huckleberries have a noticeable, tart taste, different from blueberries, and some have noticeably larger seeds. Huckleberries are consumed by many animals, including bears, birds, deer and humans. They are medium-sized to large evergreen trees, ranging from 10–60 m tall, with a conical to irregular crown, the latter occurring especially in some of the Asian species. The leading shoots generally droop.
