Squaw Peak

Squaw Peak Squaw Peak Trail is a 7 mile out and back trail located near Provo, Utah that features a river and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for birding, hiking & rock climbing and is accessible from March until November. Perhaps the most popular smaller peak in Utah County is Squaw Peak, at the mouth of Rock Canyon. From the west you can see Squaw gently rising from north to south, but the south side drops abruptly to the canyon bottom, creating a ferocious south face. For a great place to overlook the valley, head up to Squaw Peak. As you drive up Provo Canyon about three miles up there is right turn, follow the road and when it forks continue right. At night this is a popular spot in the summer for locals. One of the most popular summit hikes in Utah County, the climb to the top of Squaw Peak offers memorable highlights such as the dramatic rock walls of Rock Canyon, a climb through a wooded hillside, and panoramic views from the summit. Since at least 1910, the name Squaw Peak had been used in reference to the mountain. Other historic names included Squaw Tit Mountain, Phoenix Mountain and Vainom Doag, the Pima name for the mountain. Some people still refer to the Peak by its original name of "Squaw Peak" before its name chung to Piestewa Peak in honor of Lori Piestewa who died serving her country in the Iraq conflict.
