Beginning at Proxy Falls Trail head, Proxy Falls Trail starts by heading west and immediately entering the Three Sisters Wilderness. The trail continues south over an old lava flow, then entering a mixed conifer forest. This loop trail meets 2 trail junctions before ending back at the Proxy Falls Trail head. The trail at the western junction follows a short ridge to a viewpoint of Lower Proxy Falls. The trail at the eastern junction follows a creek bed uphill to the Upper Proxy Falls. Proxy Falls is one of the most frequently photographed waterfalls in Oregon and is certainly among the most photogenic waterfalls in the entire country. Anybody who has had a waterfall calendar has undoubtedly seen pictures of this gorgeous cascade. Fed by springs on the shoulder of North Sister, Proxy Creek breaks over a wall of columnar basalt liberally marinated in mosses, veiling 226 feet in two streams. Instead of feeding a stream, the water pooled at the foot of the falls seems to disappear, but it is actually sinking through the porous lava into the ground. Proxy Falls is one of my favorite hikes. Take the longer of the trails to have the best experience. As the trail meanders through the old lava beds make sure you are wearing sturdy shoes. This is an easy hike and so it is perfect for a family outing.
