A forest is a large area of land covered with trees or other woody vegetation. Hundreds of more precise definitions of forest are used throughout the world, incorporating factors such as tree density, tree height, land use, legal standing and ecological function. Forests are the dominant terrestrial ecosystem of Earth, and are distributed across the globe. Forests account for 75% of the gross primary productivity of the Earth's biosphere, and contain 80% of the Earth's plant biomass. The forests of California are plentiful, diverse and managed for many different objectives. California forests face a number of threats. The overall threat is not loss of forest due to harvesting. Indeed, the standing forest volume continues to increase on both private and public forest lands. In many areas of California this is leading to a profound increase in the threat of wildfire. Instead, the primary is the risk of conversion from forest to residential use. Economic value of forests as a source of woods products is decreasing due to high costs, low income, and woods products infrastructure loss.
