Big Beach Twilight Wall Art Prints
Big Beach Twilight Wall Art Prints
When the surf is calm the pristine blue-green waters of Makena are terrific for swimming, and during times of moderate surf this is a great bodysurfing beach. A path to the north (right) leads to Little Beach which is well known as a clothing optional beach parents beware even though this is illegal. Big Beach and Little Beach are divided by a hill called Puu Olai, Earthquake Hill which was formed by a 1790 lava flow and earthquake. Big Beach is well over a half a mile long, and is also uncharacteristically wide by Maui standards. That means loads of real estate to stake out your claim, and this beach, while always drawing lots of people, is never so crowded as to be packed. Big Beach has a significant on-shore break that can be downright brutal when there is a large south swell. This is never a beach that is safe for small children or inexperienced swimmers. Adults might want to think twice during high surf, as well. This is one of the largest beaches in Maui, with golden sands extending nearly 2/3 of a mile long and 100 yards wide. Visitors can swim or snorkel in these pristine waters, picnic in the shade, or simply sunbathe on the seemingly endless expanse of sand. Makena Beach provides great views of the offshore half-sunken crater of Molokini as well as the island of Kahoolawe making this a nice place for picnics in the shady areas. The lava outcroppings provide some protection from the trade winds and the sandy ocean floor and lack of coral reef makes the sea shimmer in true Hawaiian style.
