Watching water cascade over the lip of a waterfall is hypnotic. From below it starts as a raging torrent, plummeting to ground zero before feathering into a cloud of mist and soaking everything around. From above it is a different scene entirely. Lean out over the edge to spot the impact zone below and let vertigo take hold before you cower back to safety. Stumbling on a waterfall after a hot and steamy trek through a national park is like finding gold at the end of the rainbow. And there is only one thing to do; untie your shoes, strip down to the bare essentials and dive in. It is the antidote to a Queensland summer and it costs nothing! From the roar of the water and white-water rapids to the towering cliffs and dark lagoons, there are many reasons why Victoria's waterfalls capture the imagination. Though best seen in winter and spring, when rainfall is high, there are many waterfalls throughout the state that flow year-round. Taking a planned route is the easiest way to begin chasing waterfalls in Victoria. MacKenzie Falls, the largest waterfall in Victoria, is part of the Grampians National Park in the west. This popular waterfall flows year-round. For an all-day adventure, pack your bathers and head to the Erskine Falls in the Otways along the Great Ocean Road. With a series of gentle steps leading to the base of the falls, this is also a fantastic spot to bring a picnic.
