Honolulu County is a consolidated city–county located in the U.S. state of Hawaii. The City and County includes both the city of Honolulu and the rest of the island of Oahu, as well as several minor outlying islands, including all of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands except Midway Atoll. The consolidated city-county was established in the city charter adopted in 1907 and accepted by the Legislature of the Territory of Hawaii. As a municipal corporation and jurisdiction it manages aspects of government traditionally exercised by both municipalities and counties in the rest of the United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 953,207. Because of Hawaii's municipal structure, the United States Census Bureau divides Honolulu County into several census-designated places for statistical purposes. The island of Oahu has a great mix of activities, particularly in Honolulu. Take your young kids to the Waikiki Aquarium, let your teenagers loose to shop in the Ala Moana Center, or to hike around Manoa Falls. And then there's the beach; some of the most popular shores include the family-friendly sands of Kailua Beach Park, the surfer-approved waves of Waimea, and the resort-strewn sands of Waikiki. Sunset Beach's wintertime waves are too intense for amateur surfers. But this is a great place to go if you want to be a spectator. The summer tide is mellow enough for swimming. Sunset doesn't buzz with activity like Waimea, and the parking situation is far better. If you're looking to experience all that the North Shore is about, most agree this is the better beach of the two. Sunset Beach is part of the seven mile miracle, meaning beach goers can walk in any direction and find more sand, swimming and waves to watch.
