Hookipa Canvas Pictures
Hookipa is a beach on the north shore of Maui, Hawaii, USA, perhaps the most renowned windsurfing site in the world. Waves there are largest during the winter, smaller in summer. In addition to windsurfing competitions surfing contests are held there as well. The name Hookipa means "hospitality" in Hawaiian. Hookipa Beach Park is located on Maui's North Shore alongside the Hana Highway. There are picnic facilities and observation decks for visitors. There are professional windsurfing competitions held here, and on just about any day with wind you can watch pros doing their thing. Hookipa also provides sightseers a stunning backdrop to watch the best effortlessly play with the ocean in a way that mere mortals can only dream of. Overall, swimming is definitely secondary to other attractions here, as options are somewhat limited. On the Pavilions side there are small areas of sandy-bottom ocean with sheltered swimming, and there are also often small tide pools running the length of the middle of the beach that keiki love to play in. Over the years Hookipa has been the site for organized windsurfing competitions in the Wave discipline. Like many locations on the Maui and Oahu North Shore, Hookipa Beach is occasionally a tourist attraction in the winter time because of spectacularly large surf. Hookipa is not an ideal site for true big-wave riding, as the waves close out when their faces approach about 25 feet.
