Point Lonsdale is a coastal township on the Bellarine Peninsula, near Queenscliff, Victoria, Australia. The town is divided between the Borough of Queenscliffe and the City of Greater Geelong. Point Lonsdale is also one of the headlands which, with Point Nepean, The Rip, the entrance to Port Phillip. The headland is dominated by the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse. This notorious entrance to Port Phillip Bay, where ocean and bay waters collide through a kilometer-wide outlet, creates one of the world's most dangerous stretches of water. Point Lonsdale is situated on a rocky outcrop at the south-eastern end of the Bellarine Peninsula, on one side of The Rip, where the calm waters of Port Phillip meet the choppy seas of Bass Strait at this entrance point. On the other side of the bay entrance is Point Nepean, at Portsea on the Mornington Peninsula. Places of interest on Point Lonsdale's coastline include the several groynes which extend into the sea from the front beach and the Rip View Lookout which offers panoramic views across The Rip and towards Point Nepean on the Mornington Peninsula. Take a dip at the beautiful sheltered bay beach with its pleasant foreshore reserve with picnic and barbecue facilities. Wander along Point Lonsdale Pier and revel in views of the lighthouse and the surrounding coastline, or bring your rod and reel and cast a line off the pier. Reward the day's efforts with a quiet coffee at one the cafes along the esplanade and watch the action on the beach.
