Santa Barbara is blessed with beautiful beaches most of which face south rather than west. While Santa Barbara is well known for its expansive, pristine beaches, it has just as much space to offer inland as well. Santa Barbara’s beaches and parks are a testament to the city’s affinity for fresh air and outdoor fun. Santa Barbara is home to miles of public beaches, many of which serve as a launch pad for making a splash. Surf some of the most renowned breaks in the world, or stand-up paddleboard in the protected waters of Butterfly Bay. East of Santa Barbara you’ll find the cities of Carpinteria, quiet little Summerland, and ritzy Montecito. There are several great beaches along this stretch and some get few visitors compared to others. Santa Barbara’s western neighbors are the cities of Isla Vista. West of the urban areas the shoreline thins out and the beaches feel remote. This section of the Santa Barbara coast has several state parks. A beach is a landform along the coast of an ocean or sea, or the edge of a lake or river. It usually consists of loose particles, which are often composed of rock, such as sand, gravel, shingle, pebbles, or cobblestones. The particles comprising a beach are occasionally biological in origin, such as shells or coralline algae. Some beaches have man-made infrastructure, such as lifeguard posts, changing rooms, and showers. They may also have hospitality venues nearby. Wild beaches, also known as undeveloped or undiscovered beaches, are not developed in this manner. Wild beaches can be valued for their untouched beauty and preserved nature.
