Oregon largest privately owned nature sanctuary lies within the Zumwalt Prairie, North Americas largest remaining grassland of its type. According to Oregon Geographic Names, the origins of the name are uncertain, with the most likely explanation being that it is derived from the Nez Perce term for a structure of stakes used in fishing. An alternative explanation is that Wallowa is derived from a Nez Perce word for winding water. Wallowa Lake area has activities for everyone in the family. If you are interested in a campground surrounded on three sides by tall snow capped mountains and a large clear lake, this is the area for you. Outside the park area within walking distance you can enjoy wilderness trails at the Wallowa Lake trailhead, horseback riding, go-karts, canoeing, miniature golf or ride a tramway to the top of mountain. Zumwalt Prairie is a grassland area located in Wallowa County in northeast Oregon, United States. The Zumwalt Prairie grassland is situated on a basalt plateau which varies in elevation from 3,500 to 5,500 feet and is dominated by several native bunchgrasses. Zumwalt Prairie is home to a diverse array of raptor species and includes the grassland dependent ferruginous hawk, swainson hawk, rough legged hawk, and the red tailed hawk. Golden eagles are a common site soaring high above the prairie. Wallowa Lake and the Wallowa Mountains attract tourists to this region. The lake is a natural glacial formation, held in on three sides by prominent moraines.
