Black Spur

Black Spur The Black Spur is a road between the towns of Healesville and Narbethong in Victoria, Australia. It is also known as Black Spur Drive, and is part of the Maroondah Highway. Winding through rainforest, past tall trees and ferns, with the car windows down; this is Victoria’s best drive, perhaps Australia’s best drive. This is the Black Spur, 30 kilometers of road between Healesville and Marysville. Dipping and curving around each corner, the drive will take you deeper into the lush rainforests. Even on the brightest summer’s day the light is muted from the towering canopy 100 meters overhead, the air is warm and damp, and huge ferns line the roadside. Linking the Yarra Valley with the mountain areas around Marysville is the road known as the Black Spur Drive, which passes between Healesville with Narbethong on the Maroondah Highway. It is famous for its heady scenery of spectacular tall forests, the Black Spur winds its way up the Great Dividing Range. Lower the windows and savor the fragrance of the Australian bush as you pass through the forest. The drive is bordered by immense mountain ash trees that allow dappled sunlight to make its way down to the cool, lush understory of green ferns. At the base of the Black Spur you will find Fernshaw picnic area with rest facilities. The drive isn’t the only famous encounter you’ll have that day. You’ll be passing the world’s tallest flowering trees, the eucalyptus regnans, standing tall, proud and on guard protecting the rest of the forest.
